Return Period
The design wave height is often specified in terms of the average waiting time between wave heights equal to or greater than the specified value. Depending upon the importance of the structure being designed, the 50, 100, or 500 year values are among those commonly specified. These specifications are in terms of return period (often called Average Recurrence Interval or ARI).
